How to get a job at Scale AI

Checked against Scale AI's own pages on 28 July 2026. Role counts update daily.

Scale AI is a government contractor as much as an AI company, and their board makes that plain in a way their marketing does not. Around 31 open roles sit in public sector engineering, with 21 in Washington and 10 in Doha, Qatar.

This is the first thing to establish before applying, because it is not a detail. Defence and government work carries clearance requirements, citizenship restrictions and a set of ethical questions that are yours to answer rather than ours. Some people will find it the most interesting work available; others will rule the company out entirely. Both are reasonable, and it is better to know before the third interview.

Their published values are unusually specific

Scale publishes six credos, and unlike most corporate values they carry actual operational content. “Find the 20%” is a statement that 80 percent of outcomes come from 20 percent of inputs, and that you are expected to identify which. “Quality is Our Cheat Code” frames consistent delivery as the competitive advantage rather than speed. “Three Moves Ahead” asks for decisions weighed against their consequences.

The most quotable is “Write the Market”: “We don't read the market. We write it.” Read together, these describe a company that prizes prioritisation and follow-through over raw output, which is a useful frame for how to talk about your own work with them.

The data engine is the actual business

Their Human Frontier Collective and Gen AI Operations teams are among the largest open. This is the work of producing and grading the data that models learn from, at industrial scale, and it is what the other labs on this list buy from Scale.

Operations experience, quality management and program management are genuinely core here rather than support functions. 102 of 219 open roles sit outside engineering and research titles.

Where the roles are

San Francisco leads, with New York and London (26) as substantial second sites and Washington reflecting the government work. Doha is the outlier and reflects sovereign AI contracts in the Gulf, which is a growing part of their business and an unusual posting for anyone open to relocating somewhere genuinely different.

What they do not publish

Scale sets out values and benefits in detail, but says little about its interview process, competency expectations, remote policy or visa sponsorship. Take individual listings as the source of truth on location and requirements, and treat confident third-party accounts of their loop with caution.

The practical version

  • Decide how you feel about defence and government work before you apply, not after.
  • Check clearance and citizenship requirements on public sector listings early.
  • Operations and program management are core roles here, not support ones.
  • Frame your experience around prioritisation and consistent delivery, which is what their credos actually describe.
  • London, Washington and Doha are real offices, not satellites.

Credos and benefits are from Scale's careers page. Role, team and location counts are read from their live job board and refresh daily. Scale publishes no interview guidance, so this page makes no claims about their process.
