How to get a job at Perplexity

Checked against Perplexity's own pages on 28 July 2026. Role counts update daily.

Perplexity is often described as a remote-first company. Their live board does not support that. Of 113 open roles, 85 are in San Francisco and 8 are listed remote. Whatever the culture was, the hiring right now is concentrated in one city.

This matters because it is the kind of claim people plan around. If you are applying on the assumption that remote is the norm here, check the individual listing rather than the reputation.

Belgrade is the surprise

10 roles sit in Belgrade, making it their second-largest location. For engineers in central and eastern Europe that is a genuine opportunity at a frontier-adjacent company without relocating to the US, and it is not something Perplexity advertises prominently.

It is a search company, and the roles show it

Their largest team is AI Research and Systems (17), with a dedicated Search team alongside it. This is a narrower technical profile than the general-purpose labs: the problems are retrieval, ranking, latency and evaluation rather than pretraining at scale.

Published candidate accounts consistently describe interviews probing retrieval systems, LLM pipelines, ranking and low-latency architecture, alongside standard coding rounds. Those accounts are third-party rather than from Perplexity, so treat the specifics as indicative, but the emphasis is consistent with what their listings ask for.

If your experience is in search, information retrieval, recommendations or real-time systems, that transfers here more directly than a general ML background does. If you want to work on training frontier models, this is the wrong lab.

Marketing is unusually large for the company size

Marketing and Communications (13) is their second-largest team, which is striking at this headcount. Perplexity competes for consumer attention against Google and ChatGPT, and it is staffing accordingly.

For marketers this is one of the better ratios on this list: a real consumer brand problem, at a company small enough that the work is visible, and far fewer applicants than the engineering roles attract.

What is known about the process

Perplexity publishes little about how it interviews and its careers pages block automated access, so the detail below comes from candidate reports rather than from the company.

Those reports describe four to six rounds spanning coding, ML and LLM discussion and behavioural fit, and consistently characterise the bar as high and algorithmically demanding. Several describe a fast process, on the order of a couple of weeks, which is quicker than most labs here.

The practical version

  • Check each listing's location. Do not assume remote, whatever you have read.
  • Belgrade is a real second office and worth a look if you are in the region.
  • Lead with search, retrieval, ranking and latency work rather than general ML.
  • If you are a consumer marketer, this is one of the strongest opportunities on this list.
  • Expect a fast loop with a demanding coding bar.

Role, team and location counts are read from Perplexity's live job board and refresh daily. Perplexity publishes little applicant guidance and blocks automated access to its careers pages, so interview details here come from published candidate accounts and are indicative rather than official.
